The plane landed with a jolt on contact with the airport tarmac – metaphorically marking a rude awakening for us as we return to life after honeymoon.

Coming from the green open spaces of New Zealand to the hustle and bustle of Singapore was enough to dissipate the clouds around our heads and bring us crashing down to earth. But the worse is yet to come, for this is where Yvonne and myself will be parting company: she to KL and me to Penang (the complexities of our careers at this point have not enabled us to be together yet).

Confronted with this, we decided to seek solace in the company of friends in Singapore. They were mostly my classmates in school whom I have not seen for ages but nevertheless we bonded tighter than UHU glue when we met. It was just like old times. I find it comforting to know that in the decades we took to "grow up", get hitched and start family and all, much of us remain juvenile. As it is, spouting stupid jokes, fondling and grabbing body parts were the order of the day.

But the fun ended at Changi Airport when Yvonne and myself had to go our separate ways. No amount of preparation could dull the searing pain wrung from this. After our blissful and passionate experiences on honeymoon, the thought of not being able to be with one another was like plunging a blade of burning steel into the nether region of my anus (for want of a better simile).

But like they say, true love begins after the honeymoon.

We met every weekend after that with poor Yvonne doing most of the travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, an arduous feat which was slowly taking its toll on her. One year later, she managed to secure a good job in Penang and relocated to join me for good. Recently, we moved into our new apartment, a small but cosy love nest nestled on the hills of Bukit Jambul. Every night when I hold her close to me, gratitude and love fills my heart and I feel truly blessed.

(and we lived happily ever after)
