The Auckland Museum stands in Auckland Domain on the rim of an ancient volcano. The site commands spectacular views of the city and Waitemata Harbour. The Auckland Museum has many interesting exhibits on display. Among them are the "Scars of the hearts" gallery, items of national heritage and more.

Auckland marks the beginning of our honeymoon in New Zealand. The Maori name for the Auckland isthmus is Tamaki Makau Rau meaning "Battle of a thousand lovers". This refers to the  many tribes that fought over the land. Auckland is indeed beautiful, and has many interesting places to visit. Among them are the Auckland Art Gallery, Sky Tower, rows and row of shopping centres, well groomed gardens and beautiful harbours. Auckland is also know as "City of Sails". Being the commercial centre of New Zealand, this city relies on manufacturing, retailing, and commerce. It reminds me very much of Bayan Lepas, the Industrial Free Trade Zone back home in Penang.

When we first stepped into New Zealand, Saw Cheng, a close friend of mine greeted us at the airport . She graciously housed us for a few days. Pictures on the left were taken during a barbecue dinner at her place. Saw Cheng took time off from work and gave us a grand tour of Auckland and Devonport. At Devonport we visited museums and shops, and attended the Devonport Food & Wine Festival '99 (20th & 21st February '99).

We  also managed to catch the brilliant performance of Boublil & Schonberg's in "Les Miserables" at the Aotea Centre. The tickets for the 7.30pm shows were priced at NZ$77.00 (about RM 150.00) for two. It was Yvonne's first musical encounter and she enjoyed the performance very much.  However, "Phantom of the Opera" which I saw it in London back in 1997 is still my favourite.

Thank you Saw Cheng and Harry for your warm hospitality and kindness. It was good to begin our honeymoon with you.
