A Spectacle of Dance Styles
Top dancers from across the world converge in Penang come the end of November to flaunt their moves in a strutting exhibition of diverse western dance styles.

Some 350 talents from sixteen nations will flash their skills in a colourful, heated atmosphere bubbling with music, and moves of the waltz, foxtrot, tango, quick step, rhumba, pass adobe and other styles.

The 4th Malaysia International Dance Sport Championship will be held on November 29 at the indoor Penang International Sports Arena (PISA).

The event will be overseen by renowned adjudicators led by Robin Short, the honourary life president of the World Dance and Dance Sport Council.

Organised by Penevents and the Penang Tourist Centre, the evening competition promises a spectacular feast of variety and skill with synchronised rhythm and music, poise and artistry, transforming dancing into "poetry in motion".

The judges of the competition will be on the look-out for several elements in the dancers' performance: the "togetherness" of the competing couples, their poise, their "musicality" or how their movements tune with the flow of music played. The contestants will also be judged on musical interpretation and, of course, techniques like footwork.

Incidentally, dance sport has been slotted as an event during the forthcoming 2008 Beijing Olympiad.

Nations from the western continent as well as the far east are sending top dancers to the competition this year. Participating countries include England, Germany, Russia, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Phillipines, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Singapore, Korea, Thailand and host country Malaysia.

Titles up for grabs include Junior Latin, Senior Latin, Senior Modern, Jvenile Latin, open Amateur, Open Amateur Modern, Open Professional Modern, Open Amateur Latin and open Professional Latin.

Another state-level contest, the Penang International Dance Sport Championship, will be held the next day at Grand Ballroom of the Bayview Beach Resort.

The 4th Malaysia International Dance Sport Championship will be held at PISA from 6.30pm till 11pm on the 29th of November. Terrace seating tickets are priced at RM20 for adults and RM10 for children below 12 years.
